GapYear 2017: Multiple Internships at Top Companies for Students Graduating from Bachelor’s Programs

Applications now being accepted for internship program from Allianz, Bertelsmann, McKinsey, Project A Ventures and new partners SAP and Zalando

Dusseldorf/Berlin, September 12, 2016. Students who are on track to complete their bachelor’s course in the summer of 2017 can now apply for GapYear 2017. The renowned companies Allianz, Bertelsmann, McKinsey & Company, SAP, Zalando and Project A Ventures have partnered to create a new internship program aimed at excellent students of all subjects who wish to take a year off from their university studies between completion of their bachelor’s degree and entrance into a master’s program. With the submission of a single application, candidates may qualify for a tailor-made program where participants receive the opportunity to complete multiple paid internships, each lasting three months, at up to four of the GapYear sponsor companies over the course of a year.

The number and duration of the internships can also be adjusted to fit individual needs. To round out their gap year experience, participants will also have the chance to realize one of their own personal projects or plans. The GapYear program was conceived to encourage college graduates to take a year off in order to gather experience after completing their bachelor’s course and to assist them in using this time for their own personal and professional development in the most meaningful way possible. The program developers saw the need for such a program as a counterbalance to the structure of today’s bachelor’s courses, which tend to be shorter and more focused on specific curricula, resulting in less space for students to participate in extensive internships or realize their own plans during their studies. GapYear’s combination of practical experience with top international companies and a break which participants themselves design makes the program the only one of its kind in Germany.

During the application process, students can indicate which of the six partner companies they would most like to intern at and specify the personal project that they have in mind for their gap year. The latter may be for example volunteer work for a charity organization, a language course or even a backpacking trip.

A selection committee featuring representatives from all six partner companies plans to meet in January and February 2017 in order to make a joint decision on which candidates to accept into the program. The partners and participants will then sit down together to plan out the locations and order of the internships as well as the focus of the personal projects.
